Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor and the Caltrans Maintenance Lead worker, the Equipment Operator II is responsible for operating sign installation equipment such as digger derrick truck, personnel hoists, cranes and various manual/power hand tools. Incumbent will also perform non-equipment operation duties, such as shoveling, digging, building signs, heavy lifting and all associated sign maintenance work. Incumbent may be loaned to other crews as necessary. Shift may vary from winter to summer months. Incumbent will be required to work overtime, irregular shifts, nights, holidays and weekends if necessary.

Working Conditions

Position located at 850 Elvee Drive Salinas, CA 93901, Monterey County

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

Incumbent can expect to be outside most of the day in all kinds of weather. The work is physically demanding and requires stamina, agility and strength. May be subject to not only sunburn, poison oak, snake and insect bites, but load noise, dust, and chemicals. In addition, the job is hazardous because it is performed at the side of the road or in the roadway itself, where workers are exposed to vehicular traffic. Worker may be required to work rotating or irregular shifts, including, nights and in emergency situations caused by storms and floods. Incumbents normal work hours will be a 5/40 shift, Monday through Friday.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
  • The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid unrestricted Class A commercial driver’s license, with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
