Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a bureau-wide, statewide consultant position responsible for assisting the Field Operations Environmental Administrator. The position provides technical, scientific, and professional expertise and guidance on the physical protection of Category 1 and Category 2 quantities of Radioactive Material (a.k.a. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) 10 CFR Part 37). The incumbent will also be responsible for developing and providing trainings in different parts of the state and conducting more challenging on-site inspections and investigations in the Southwestern Region. Other duties include:

 

Conducts assigned on-site inspections of x-ray facilities and users of radioactive materials. Assignments will include the more difficult or complicated type of x-ray facilities and/or Part 37 radioactive material licensees where demonstrated competence will be required.

 

Performs radiation emergency response duties, assessing hazards and taking appropriate actions to minimize radiation exposure to workers, the public, and the environment.

 

Performs radiation related investigations as assigned.

 

Serves as mentor for new staff. Maintains and enhances professional and technical skills through training and professional organizations.

 

Serves as radiation technical advisor when answering radiation workers and public concerns. Serves on committees when requested to further radiation research issues.

 

Assists the Field Operations Environmental Administrator, inspection staff, and the section by providing technical, scientific, and professional guidance on NRC Part 37 needs. Provides quality assurance and statewide training as deemed necessary by the Field Operations Environmental Administrator. Coordinates continuing education for inspection staff on Part 37 and other federal regulatory changes. Researches and helps develop or improve training needs for staff on inspection procedures. Serves on in-house training workgroups.

 

Assists the Field Operations Environmental Administrator with Part 37 training, development of procedures, and audits staff on Part 37 inspections as assigned. Provides technical, scientific, and professional guidance to the section on federal regulations like security zones, physical protection of Category 1 and 2 materials. Investigates special areas and reports unusual findings to the Field Operations Environmental Administrator. Serves on in-house workgroups to help maintain the BRCpedia content in compliance with NRC regulations, and other related duties as assigned by the Environmental Administrator.

 

Assist administrator and incident response consultant on incident response and investigations. Assist incident response consultant on developing an annual review of incident investigations and lessons learned for statewide training purposes.

 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of radiation.

 

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent 4 years of experience in the area of chemistry, physics, health physicist (radiation related) or nuclear medicine technology (or similar work experience).
